    Default Is this an Emergency?

My dog ripped his toe nail up the middle. 4th digit, left front. Nail is still attached, blood around nail, but not bleeding. Dog is panting, but breathing fine. He is holding his paw up, I am sure it probably stings!

The problem, I am home with 3 kids, sick, and my husband isn't answering his cell phone. I called the vets, and she said they could get him in, but not till 2:30, and would charge me $72 emergency fee. Is this something that can hold off? I am not sure if they are there tomorrow, so till Monday?

If in doubt, go to the vet. If you hold off & it gets infected, it will cost you a hell of a lot more than $72 not to mention the pain the dog must be in.

Since the bleeding has stopped, I'd say you could probably keep it clean and bandaged and wait. My dog tore his nail but it was half way off so we took him in, and they just cut it way back and bandaged it.

Not so much the bill I am worried about, it is taking him, with 3 kids, and me being sick. Still trying to get a hold of my husband. He is at a flight meeting. Men that don't turn their cell phones on!

My Shepherd mix ripped his nail off a couple of weeks ago..it bled alot..I put some flour on it and vet wrapped it for a day..He held it up while it was wrapped but once we took the wrap off he was fine. We kept an eye on it for infection but he never got one. We never took him to the vet, I'm not sure there was anything they could've done. I wouldn't rush in, just keep an eye on it, I'm sure he'll be fine.

Took him in, since it went from a split nail, to him chewing the nail off What a goof ball he is. He really played up the whole sympathy act with the staff. He got himself a blue elasticon bandage, and an iv bag to tie to his leg for when he goes outside. She said keep it dry for 5 days. Ok, she don't know labs very well....he isn't gonna leave this alone for 5 days

Pitch is still wondering if he should take as a comment that his head is as big as a rottie! The vet said her Rotties head is as big as Pitch's Well he has a big brain, what can I say! Also there was a woman in the waiting room, that didn't believe me that he was a lab....Sorry, but he is. What is he mixed with...I said lots of love!

Aww I'm sorry You had to deal with that with being sick and all, but I'm glad Pitch is doing better!

Slight thread hijack, but I really love the answer "lot's of love" to what is he mixed with.
I hope for Pitch's sake the next five days go quickly and quietly

Ask your vet about putting a collar on him if he keeps biting it. I had to put one on my girl because she was biting on an eczema patch on her leg. I bought a waste paper basket, cut the bottom out & attached it to her collar. She wasn't amused, but it worked.

I love your bucket idea. My old vet use to use New Mop Buckets. I like that on yours, you can see out side of it, so they dog doesn't have tunnel vision. So far, he is chewing it a bit, but it is still attached. That must be some super strong tape. See what the night brings.
