I can answer some of your questions, but not the one about DIY the Invisible Fence (IF).
I had the company install mine, simply because I am not at all inclined to stuff like that. Besides, I was concerned if I did something wrong I could hurt Lexi.
I have my entire yard fenced, with two spots on either side of the house where the fence tucks in. This is so Lexi can not loop completely around the house. To get from the front yard to the back yard, she has to come through the carport.
In the 2 years Lexi's been on the IF, she has gone through it less than 6 times. Two of those times were recently & mommy's fault for being lazy & not putting her collar on her. Even when she does not have her IF collar on, she generally does not venture too close to the boundary line.
I had one session with a IF trainer about 2 weeks after the system was in. They actually gave her the first corrections on the system. The training is a HUGE key to an IF system, if you don't follow the training plan, the system is really no good. It is the repetition & letting that the correction from it, that works best.
One last thing, which I am sure someone else mention... the IF can keep your dog in, but not other animals out. If you live in an area that has alot of wild animals or strays, it might not be the best option.
I have had an invisible fence for about 5 or 6 years. This was for my Australian Shepherd (about the size and weight of a grown lab) and my beagle mutt. They have neither one run through it. They know exactly where it is and they stay back. The IF guy is coming Friday to check on the system, make sure it is working properly, put the flags back up for Parker and train him on the system. Also in case you didn't know you can use IF inside too they put it on the underside of your floor in case you don't want the dog in a particular room.
The key like the above poster said is ALWAYS KEEP THE COLLAR ON. If you take it up they wise up pretty quickly and it's off to the races.
I put one in myself. Used a power lawn edger to make a small trench for the wire. We had fenced in about 3 acres, but last summer I made the area smaller. The original boundary went behind our barn and I could not see what they were doing when they went that far. What I like about the system, is I was able to put a loop around the compost pile. Jake use to love to get in there and eat stuff. Now he can't. Every spring I put the flags back up and do a short refresher course. It isn't fail proof, but it has worked for us.
My daughter put it around her house, 1500 ft. of wire. One dog won't cross the boundary and the other could care less and runs out of the yard and then through our fence to come see my dogs! He has never gone anywhere but to my yard. So he gets 4 shocks on his round trip and he never flinches.
I had a company put mine in. 1/2 acre. Training was a piece of cake, and you just had to ingrain it every day for a couple weeks. After 30 minutes he knew where the boundaries were.
