Default To The Dogs The Sound of Leash or Colar Means WALK! But, There is NO Walk!

When Aysa or Allie hear the sounds of our walking equipment - they get all excited; VERY excited, especially Aysa, my older dog, who is now teaching this behavior to Allie.

I totally understand their excitement. I know I cannot change that, but I need to temper it.

When Ranger comes home next week, he will be on leash most of the time and probably making a racket.

How do I deal with the over excitement of the other two dogs? When the little guy is running around, the clank-clank, will get my two girls all ramped up.

Will they get all frustrated and disappointed, or after a few days, will they get over the "Pavlov's Dog" syndrome?

Oops, I may not have wrote this correctly. I'm concerned that my two dogs I have now are going to get all excited and wired when the pup is running around with his leash/collar on making noise and they will not be going to be going for a walk.

I need them to know that every time they hear that sound or something similar it is not for them.

    Thanks!! Sorry for confusion.

This is NOT a Big Mac!

Like any other training it's a matter of rewarding proper behavior and ignoring bad behavior. I have been working on your same problem with my two boys. As soon as they see their collars and/or leash they go bonkers. I have now started to make them sit immediately and I stand over their quivering butts until they calm down, then they get a treat. Then I can rig them up while they are quietly sitting.
If they won't sit for you then either leave the room or put the collars away, you must simple ignore their bad excited behavior.
There is a time for exuberance and play but not when you are trying to put their collars on. It's no fun to get head butted as you lean over to put a collar on.

I know what you mean! Legend jumps almost as high as I am tall (5'3"). I make him sit and he just is beside himself with shaking and wild eyes. Once he is collared, I turn to Lily to collar her. She stands still for me once I put the collar around her to clip. However, Legend begins barking in my face (while he is sitting) as if to say "Hurry up!" The barking is quite obnoxious. Any suggestions? Speak loudly my hearing is gone LOL
