    Default Walking :)

I have been working with Tal on walking off leash at an enclosed area at my school. He had progressed to the point I decided to try it here when I took out the trash tonight. He stayed close by too....and when he started to look like he wanted to go somewhere else I called his name and pointed to my eye....and he comes a runnin, stops, goes into a sit and I give him a treat only occasionally now!

I would never walk him around here off leash but I am working up to when I take him to the park (not the dog park area) that has an area really not used much. I want him to come to me. He seems to be picking it up pretty well.

I decided to walk him for about 20 min too...he did really well. I was glad I had him on leash because this lady out running with her dog off leash saw us and stopped and put her dog's leash on. Of course Tal got excited, but responded when I called his name.

Still a ways to go yet but he seems to be getting it so far. Of course the adolescence is coming up here real soon!

    Good training, MFD.

When my Seamus (he's 4 years now) was Tal's age I used the on-lead command "by me" to get him to stop lurching. "By me" brought him to heel and then we would walk walk walk.

You do what you do, that which is comfortable to both of you and the behavioural results are so pleasing.

Thanks...I try. Tal is getting better about not lurching on leash...actually I think he does better about not lurching off leash...go figure. I try to be careful and deliberate about how/when/where I let him go to the next level. I can't wait until obedience class in January!
