Hi
I am also a newbie here and was shocked by the initial post.
As many know we are bringing our little lady home from the breeders in two and half weeks time! ;D ;D She comes from an awesome line with champion parents but I for one have no intention of breeding her in the future for ALL of the reasons listed here. Not to mention I have no experience and do not want to bring another 6-11 puppies into the world ~ mostly cause I would want to keep them all myself. ;D
But on a serious note `~ breeding your dog because you love his qualities is NOT a reason to breed. Go to a shelter or rescue I'm sure you can find a dog there that is equally as beautiful inside and out.
Respectfully,
Patti

You know, I HATE comments like that. Sorry TobysTrix, this isn't an attack on you, just that I had to say something this time. I totally understand the overpopulation of pets and the need to spay and neuter to help control that, but I take offense at hearing that kind of comment because I have an intact male and an intact female and I am fully able to keep them apart during the female's season. Even before we had her in the home, we never had a problem with our male running off an getting any dogs pregnant. I certainly agree that there are many STUPID dog owners out there who just let their intact animals roam (male AND female). To me, it's like going up to a cigarette smoker and saying...."Did you know those could kill you?" No DUH! Not every intact dog is running around impregnating intact females. I know it happens by accident too, under the best watch, but it has nothing to do with LUCK.Originally Posted by TobysTrix

Sorry. I don't want to let this thread devolve any further, and I really think that most people here did a great job at reigning in the initial inflammatory and emotional reactions. I don't want to be responsible for this thread turning into a flame-job or shouting match. Of course there are responsible owners that make sure their intact animals don't cause unwanted pregnancies, and nearly all of the time they are successful. There are also owners who are a bit less careful (not that they are completely irresponsible, mind!), and so "accidents" happen. Then there are irresponsible owners, but that is a whole other ball game, and I did not mean to imply that the OP or anyone else belongs in that category - quite the opposite, I doubt those particular people bother to join online forums and ask advice...Originally Posted by CYNLABS
True, avoiding accidents takes more than luck. But unless you have a set-up that permits you to guarantee that even under the "best watch" accidents don't happen, I don't see how luck has nothing to do with it. Isn't it lucky that the intact male didn't encounter a female in season because HER owner wasn't responsible, or because she somehow got out, or any number of other possible scenarios (however unlikely)? I said "inadvertadently". But this is just MY opinion.
Again, no offense to anyone, especially to you, CYNLABS. This is not an attack, it is just a response. Everyone makes decisions that are personal. There will be other people who disagree with those decisions in principle or in practice, even if they were made as informed choices. Personally (really, personally only!!!), I don't understand why anyone other than a breeder would keep an adult animal intact. But that's MY opinion only. Other people do and will feel differently and that is their right. It doesn't make them irresponsible. I also don't think that there should be government mandated spay/neuter laws, like some communities are putting on the books, those laws are only going to cause more problems than they will solve - also MY opinion only, clearly there are others that disagree.
And BRAVO to the OP for responding to these posts on a sensitive subject without taking offense. I hope that he/she continues to participate in the forum and keeps an open mind. And I hope that pictures get posted successfully, too! Good luck.
