Oh boy, where to start with this story. SU and I often see loose dogs on our walks. Usually they are grubby but don't look terrible. Except we saw this one little female and she was always in the same area and was looking worse each time. One time I coaxed her over and got her leash and we decided to turn her in to a rescue and then some woman came and motioned to me (spoke Japanese) that it was her dog. Well I couldn't take her then. I have seen her in the same wet narrow alley a few times but she wouldn't come to me. Owner let her drag a leash around and run free in the busy roads* >* I saw her almost get hit by a car once. I finally had enough of seeing her suffer so this time we saw her I got her to come to me and we brought her home. SU said the owner will be upset because it was her dog. I said if she loved her she wouldn't look like she does and would be inside. She was in much worse condition than I had thought. I didn't know she was white because of the filth and oh so stinky. Most of her hair is missing and she has sores all over. Despite all this, she is a sweet girl. I washed her and quarantined her in Barnsley's kennel so he wouldn't pick up anything. The rescue organization was full and couldn't take another dog so we took her to the vet ourselves. She had fleas (which I removed) which were so bad that she developed an allergic reaction. Vet thinks she will be okay and gave me a week of antibiotics and steroids for her. Her heartworm came back neg. and her stool culture was okay also. She is skin and bones and weighs 16 lbs. I guess we have a new dog! Barnsley likes her but thinks he can be rough and play. I am keeping her crated most of the time to rest and heal. She is really a spunky little thing despite her conditon.
Since I am new to rescuing scruffy strays, if anyone has advice on other tests I should have done, what shots to get, things I need to do, let me know. Eventually we will have her spayed. Oh, vet estimates 1-2 y.o. and we still haven't named her.

Thanks for the encouragement and kind words everyone. Once I had her completely flea free (hope so anyways) she and Barnsley met. She is a typical terrier mix and has been winning the bitey face matches. I think Barnsley is enjoying having her around. Now he doesn't bite at us anymore*I am working on house training her so I have her tied to me with a leash today. This came after she had 2 accidents in the house. I also am using the crate (she hates that). That has also cut down on some of the bitey face. She is such a little firecracker.
Her rash already is less red and she has stopped scratching** I think I will wait until she is doing better and then will check into the shots and getting her all fixed up! I will probably just worm her prophylacticaly since vets usually can't tell if they have worms I guess.* I took her to a Japanese vet clinic and they were so nice. It is such a cool place. They give you a member card and you bring it each time and it holds your info. etc. It looks like a credit card. You don't have to make appts. You just come and get seen as your turn arrives. They have a lot of vets so it didn't take very long. The vet at the Air Force base almost requires an emergency to get an appt. less than 1 month out.
You know who she reminds me of? Did you ever see that movie with Patrick Swayzee called "Three Wishes"? His scruffy dogs name was Betty Jane and I think she looks just like her. Sorta kinda You are right about her looking like a terrier mix. She probably has some Okinawan dog (shiba inu) in her as well which gives her those cute goofy ears. I am not used to having a dog that is so vocal. She yaps when she is trying to talk to us and barks at Barnsley when he takes her toys. Barnsley doesn't know what to think of that either. He pretty much stops whatever he was doing. It will be fun to see their relationship develop. Now I will be double busy trying to train both of them. I don't know how those of you with more than 2 dogs can cope
Oh, almost forgot. We finally decided on a name for her. We've been calling her "little dog" for 2 days. We named her Lilly![]()

Good luck and kudos for rescuing her. She is a cutie. Good luck. I still cannot believe people treat their dogs the way we see...
Oh poor little thing; she's so lucky you rescued her! She's really adorable and I'm sure she'll be even cuter when she gets healthy. My cat is allergic to fleas and gets little scabs during flea season without advantage (we learned this when we first rescued him). The doctor gave him a dose of cortisone and he was good to go.
Congrats and good luck.

Oh my goodness she is a cutie!!!
I would think that you should have her checked for worms, but that's all that comes to mind. Maybe check out the rescue boards and see what they say about shots. I think I've read that the shelters/rescues give them the shots anyway to be on the safe side but don't take my word on that one.

Oh what a little cutie. She looks like she needs a better home than where she was. Good for you. She looks quite young too. I wouldn't know what else to check for as long as you brought her to the vet already. Hope she heals from her allergic reaction soon. She already looks happy to be in a new, LOVING home! Enjoy and Congratulation. Please keep posting pics and updating us!

Congratulations! What a sweet face. I would ask your vet what they reccomend as far as possible shots...I believe there is a test they can do (Titer test) to see how much of an antibody to certain viruses your dog has to help determine what, if any shots are needed. I'm not very familiar with it so I don't know how accurate it is. Good luck!
