I have an older house and the garbage can (one of those plastic ones with step lid) is in the corner. I was about to go out and buy a new stainless steel one but it just dawned on me that the new puppy we are getting this weekend may try to get in there. Can I keep a garbage can in the kitchen or will I need to put it out of reach for a while?
out of reach is better. Either behind cupboard doors or in another room. There may be some garbages that latch well enough so that a dog can't get in but...you never know![]()
I never really liked the idea of a dog being allowed in the kitchen, bathrooms or laundry rooms. Those rooms are usually the ones that contain the most significant dangers for a puppy such as various household cleaners, bleach, etc. Is it possible to use a baby gate and just keep the puppy out of the kitchen altogether?
I purchased one from Bed Bath and Beyond that locks. LOVE IT!

Do both! I have an awesome stainless steel garbage can that opens when you push the lever on top, and stands waist-high, completely dog proof. And pretty!!![]()

It's a couple years old so I don't know if I could find a link. But that says it in itself - bin is a couple years old, sits in plain sight, not ONE successful garbage raid for poor Baloo, LOL!!![]()

HK is very food/scent motivated. We use a step-lid trash can in the kitchen. She has never attacked it.
Of course, that may be due to the fact that we put nothing in it that has food residue. I take anything with an odor/scent directly out to the Garbage can in the garage.
