Keith and I cooked baby back ribs last night (short ribs) and as I was cleaning up guess who stole a rib? Yup Avery started to chew on one and I ran over and he swallowed it!!!!!!!! I've been watching him closely and he's acting fine, eating fine, his poop is fine. I called the vet who said he probably will be ok, just to watch and see if his stool has blood in it.... I also read online that if you give him cotton balls soaked in milk it will help when it comes out?! Has anyone heard of this?
I swear it's always something with Avery!! Should I be really concerned? Has anyone else's dog eaten a bone they shouldn't have?

I assume the rib was already cooked? Short ribs are about 3 inches long?
Did he get some good crunches on it first? I would think getting some good crunches would be better rather than trying to pass the whole thing. I think at this point the cotton balls would not be of much benefit. I always thought the cotton ball strategy was for things like just eaten glass ornaments like of thing.
Good luck! Labbies can get into some pretty interesting stuff! Hope everything passes soon!

Ribs were already cooked, and it was like the end of the rib so it was about 2". He got a few chomps on it before he swallowed it. He seemed fine this morning when we went for a long walk before work. So I'm hoping he just poops it out. Vet said he's a big pup now so it should pass...

If it was that small of a piece & he got a couple of good chomps on it first, I would not worry. It being cooked also made it softer than an uncooked bone.
Like everyone said, just keep an eye on him, but I suspect he'll pass it & you'll never even know it.
My pretty girl, Lexi!
Oh lucky you, you get to be on poop watch. Rush & Boo have both eaten things they shouldn't (rabbits, birds etc.) and have had no problems.
Sounds like it was small enough to pass. If he did chomp on it, there may be a concern if any splinters formed. Watching for blood in the fecses and just general continuation of his defactation cycle for two days should be the end of your concern. I say two days, because that seems to be the cycle for HK quite often when she eats somethig fobidden.

Ed, just as an aside, I love your HK siggy picts!!

Like everyone said, keep an eye on him, but he'll probably be fine.
Bella is notorious for finding bones during our walks - usually either rib bones or chicken bones. I know especially that cooked chicken bones can splinter and potentially be a problem, but I have long since adopted the approach of just letting her take her time to eat it. She does a good job of crushing the bone up into fairly small pieces, so I'd rather just let do that than try to get it away from her and have her swallow big pieces of it down quickly.

I guess Avery went for the HURRY SHE'S COMING SWALLOW IT approach. Went home for lunch and he's ok. I was pressing on his abdomen and he didn't seem bothered. He rolled over and was like YESSSS BELLY RUBS! Pooped normal too. I'll continue to watch him for any bad signs.
Thanks everyone for putting my mind at ease.
