    Default Why a lab?

What chose you to get a lab? How did you get your lab? It is very interesting well I think interesting to hear how and why you got a Labrador. We got a Labrador since after we read up on them we knew a lab was for us. They are kids forever, active, and good with kids which was very important. They could also keep up with going to our softball games and be friendly with every one. I got my first lab Abby from my grandma and aunts when Gizzy had a litter of pups and the dad was a black Labrador. Tank was a rescue adn Bentley was a rescue. We were wanting another dog with Bentley. We were not looking for a specific breed. Did not have to be a pure bred either had to be a medium to large dog though So how did you meet your lab and why did you pick a Labrador?

I had a lab as a kid, and loved him to bits but he died young as someone poisoned him (and a number of other dogs). DH had also grown up with labs and setters. Our first dog together was a rescue, and anatolian/lab cross.

When it came to get another dog, we discussed a number of breeds. The first was the Anatolian but we could not find any breeders in the UK. DHs second choice was an Irish wolfhound but those dogs are massive and i really didn't think we would have the space for it (and i would be the one walking it most of the time...) MIL had just lost her dog and was talking about getting another one so we all talked about it and the one breed that we all could agree on was a lab. So we got 2 from the same litter, one for us (harvey) and one for MIL (Seth).

I have never regretted it. From the day i met Harvey i was smitten. I met him when he was 5 weeks old. I had to wait 3 weeks before i could take him home, they seemed like a real long 3 weeks!!

(i would still like to ahve an anatolian one day, i keep an eye on the UK KC website to see if any breeders have turned up. There must be some somewhere, after all, where would our Rinnie have come from. At the time we had Rinnie, we knew of one person in the UK who had anatolians, he was a samll time 'celebrity' who had 2. He lived anout 20 miles from us so i do suspect that one of his dogs was involved in the creation of our Rinnie).

I grew up with mini poodles and English cockers and did not like either. My son at the age of 14 got a 1/2 lab 1/2 golden giveaway and I fell in love. I am not on my 3rd and 4th labs and would not have any other dog. Just love the personality.

I chose a lab because I had a fear of dogs. As weird as it sounds, I feared dogs but smaller dogs mostly (due to a bite when I was 6) but at the same time I also liked bigger dogs, just wished I understood them better. After some changes in my life i was going to live on my own but I thought it would be nicer to share the space with a pet. And then every so often I'd meet someone who had a lab, a co-worker, then my cousins that I stayed with when visiting Chicago, then another friend etc. I knew I liked that breed's personality so I decided to do some research on labs, bought some books, looked things up on line and talked to people with labs. Then I met a breeder and she also answered a lot of my questions. I thought for my first dog, I wanted one who's personalty matched mine, and I wanted one from a breeder as I did not want one from a shelter (in the even that it had issues and as an inexperienced dog owner I did not feel ready to handle those) and I did not know much about rescues at that time, so I met this little pup and he was perfect for me. And that's how Saba came about

To be honest I never much cared for the lab. It wasn't until I met Heidi a black lab that I came to appreciate the lab; she was such a sweet, smart old girl. Still my first rescue was Annie a little beagle/gsd mix, thought I would always have a mutt.

It was the unexpected rescue of Bailey our newfie/fc mix that led us to lab rescue and the adoption of Coleman, a big beautiful black lab. It was Coleman that truly got me hooked with his gentle, sweet loving self. Then our fostering failure with Tootsie our little chocolate wiggle only encouraged me to welcome Sarah our youngest black girl. She was given to us by friends that dabbled in breeding. Ginger although not a lab came along needing help and terrorized her way lovingly into our family.

Those are the reasons why we have a Lab (Caleb is our 3rd). We just love their fun loving, gentle personality, and the fact that they act like puppies almost all thier lives. Of all the breeds I've owned in my life, the Labs are the only ones that people referred to as people in fur coats.

Thank you Deidra you have a beautiful little furry family too. awww look at that little boston so sweet.

Ginger is full of energy she wears out the others including the cats before she is worn out. Keeps everyone on their toes, but she is such a sweet loveable snuggle bug. I noticed that one side of your Aunt's boston is white does she have a blue eye or is it also brown?

Jo was given to us by our vet at the time. He & his wife bred him. We had a really bad run of luck in that we lost 3 dogs in 12 months. One from heart, one from kidney failure & the other from a brain tumour.

Pat rang Mum one day & asked how would we like a Labrador? She said she felt so sorry for us with all the tragedy, she was going to give him to us. Stupid question. We went & picked up this black 4 month old pup the next day & the rest is history.
