We had a black lab when I was growing up. My parents thought he was a mix, but Slick looked pretty labby to me.
When our kids were young, we got a puppy ( golden retriever/black lab/German shepherd mix) from my BIL. Cammie was the best dog ever, and after having a dog for almost 15 years, I had to get another when she went. I'd always wanted a big, shiny black lab.
Gentleness, intelligence, and goofiness is what I love about them. Bean's got it all, except the BIG size.
My husband had a GSP growing up and my family always had mixed-breed rescues. We decided when we were done with college (and engaged) we would get a dog since we are both "dog people". I told my husband he could pick the breed since he waited years for another dog (he was 15 when his GSP died) and was then 24. He said he wanted a lab because they are good natured, like the water and are good with kids. So, a lab it was. And here we are- almost 2 years later with 2 labs. As some have stated, we will always have at least one lab in our house.
Man,most of these stories are Bitter sweet.

Why a Lab? Because they are the best dog and friend one can have of course!!.... I always wanted a dog once I was on my own. I wanted a hunting dog and pal for me and my kids. I also always wanted a dog that loved the water and outdoors as much as I do. Easy choice. As someone else mentioned, I think I will always have a Lab in my house

My grandparents always had pointers but their neighbor had a lab, Cappy! Besides the fact that Cappy saved my life when I was two (something about dragging me out of the lake) when the pointers had enough of me, Cappy would still hang around until we both crashed and he was my pillow. I vowed then that I would have a lab. I got my first lab, Tanka, Tank for short, for $49 from a pet shop window. Severe hip dysplasia aside, he was the best friend I could have ever had. I was young, a sophomore in college, and we'd pass him in and out of the dorm windows because dogs weren't allowed. The next year I got an apartment. Dogs were allowed to go to class and I swear he learned more organic chemistry than I did. He's been gone nearly 25 years now and I still miss him.
Richard Wolter in "Family Dog" once wrote "I still wouldn't trade my stupid, thick, slow, black ignoramous for that fast, smart, Golden genius. Just lucky I started with labs I guess!" I grew up with dogs but it was labs that caught my heart.

We got our first Lab, Abby, when our daughter wanted a puppy. I liked Goldens but didn't want that much fur. So a Lab it was. She was my companion for almost 13 years, during which we had some very difficult times in our family. I took care of her for about 3 months after she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. I missed her terribly. Along came Jeb almost a year later. We enjoyed him so much we got Hamton 2 1/2 years later. So..... here I sit on the couch with both my boyz. They have introduced me to many wonderful people while entering the world of obedience and agility. I cannot imagine owning any other breed,
