    Default Lepto vaccine?

The vet really threw me for a loop this morning: It seems they have added the lepto vaccine to their annual recommendations. ?

I have never thought about this as an area where Lepto was a big problem, but according to him they've seen an increased number of cases.

I declined for today so I could think about it.

I know this is the vaccine with the highest incidence of side effects. I also know that it's recommended annually in some areas.

Just wondered what your thoughts were on it.

I'm thinking about a "poll" of other area vets, and maybe calling the health department to see if they have any information.

Java and Moka both get the Lepto vaccine as they are always swimming in the brook, streams, rivers, lakes, ponds, puddles (lol) etc.
Neither one has ever had any side effects from it.

My dogs also get the Lepto vaccine. No side effects here either.

Interesting. Thanks for sharing your experiences!

What area of the country are you both in?

I know we are in a recommended area - I have to be very careful about standing water, etc - as Morgan is throat closing, eye swelling breath catching allergic - Harley - she can handle anything still!

Never heard of it. I guess it must not be much of concern out here in the Pacific NW.

Dozer gets the lepto vaccine every year (as did Cybil) because we live in a high-raccoon area and we also do a lot of wilderness camping/hiking/canoeing. We've never had a side effect. My sister's pup (6 months old) was accidentally vaccinated twice in one day. OMG! The first person who did it (the dog was dropped off at the vet) didn't write it on the chart and so someone else did it. She did not have any (immediate) side effects from it.

Lepto is an ugly disease. We had a dog die of lepto when I was in high school.

It is recommended in our area, but Raven had a reaction to it when she was 1 year old so we have not given it since then. She got all itchy and her face got really swollen.

What a day for this post. Kate got her 1 year DHLPP today. Lepto was in it & this is the first time she has had the lepto vaccine. Her face swelled. DH took her back to the vet and she got a shot of benadryl & a steroid. But our vet said because of what we do with the girls we should get it next year. We will just have to pre-treat before she gets the shot.
