Our Duke is almost 6 months old now. My fiance and I want two labs so that they can play together and have each other. I don't want Duke to be too young for a sister (yes, we want a girl this time!) but I also don't want him to be too old to want to play with her. I was thinking when he was maybe 3 or 4? What is everyone elses' opinion or how long did you wait before getting your second lab(or other dog)?
We waited until Jeb was almost three years old, thinking it would be easier with one relatively mature Lab. It has worked beautifully-Jeb is young enough to enjoy playing with Hampton and yet trained enough that he's not also a handful. My suggestion would be to wait until the first dog is at least 2 years old. I love to watch our 2 butt-tuck around the yard or deck. They occasionally do so inside. Quite a hoot.

My dog turned 3 in January, and we are starting now to look for a puppy. For us, I don't think I could of done two puppies.
2-3 years is my preferred spacing... but definitely wait till Duke is done adolescence, around 18 months
Our wait for a second lab wasn't based on age...we waited until we moved out of town and onto acreage so everyone would have elbow room. As soon as we purchased our present home (about 10 years ago), we adopted #2. She was followed closely by #3! While I may not always have 3 sweeties, I know that if I have one (and I always will), then I'll have two. I know not everyone feels that space is an issue, but it is so nice to have room for everyone to chase, play and butt-tuck. They romp with such wild abandon that it does my heart good.
I waited until Rider was almost 4. It was so much easier raising a puppy with a well trained dog. Rookie is now 3 and Rider will be 7 and I'm looking for the next installment. :-)

2-4 years is perfect to my mind
at the moment (without planning it at all) our dogs are spaced 3 years apart - turning 1, 4, 7,and 10 this year 9and one brain lesion fella who could be 13?? so we'll say he is) - it's a great groove - the most succesful spacing yet

I got my first Lab as a second dog. He joined my 9 year old Dutch Shepherd. She was very healthy, spry and played well with him Also - she was a great help in getting him (a 6 month old untrained wild child) under control. She let him get away with absolutely nothing.
We added Blaise - the second Lab - as an 8 week old puppy when Diesel was almost 3 (Lucy had gone to the bridge the previous Fall). This age gap is perfect. Blaise is now 15 months old, Dee is 4 and they are great companions.
Sharon - still not a dude.
Samson was 8 when I got Jasper and Jasper was 6 when I got Dylan
