    Default "You are too thin!"

"You need to stop losing weight!"
    "I hope you're DONE dieting!"
    "You're disappearing!"

I don't know how to react to these comments that I'm getting. A lot. I am officially on maintenance -- and have been since July. So I'm holding steady at around 180 or so (dipping to 177, rising to 185 etc.). Is it that I'm now in clothes that fit, as opposed to the 'fat' clothes I used to wear? Were people just unaware as the weight was coming off and now only notice the cumulative effects? I could understand that last one if we were talking about comments from people I haven't seen in a year+, but that's NOT the case.....

Also -- My BMI still lists me as overweight. If I wanted to get down to a 'normal' BMI, I'd have to peel another handful of pounds. Not sure I want to even go there, based on the comments....

And. I'm still toning. Still have a bit of a pootch in front. Do I continue to diet that away (trying to reduce overall bodyfat) or simply keep up with the crunches?

Maybe I should raise all this w/my doctor?

i think you should raise that with your doctor. i doubt he'll want you to continue dieting if you've reached your target weight. that BMI calculator is BS. i've used a bunch of different ones and get varied results - underweight, overweight and within range.

i get those comments too..."you're too thin! stop losing weight!" oh and my favorite from my aunt "your face looks gaunt." and a happy day to you too! most of them are very nice, but then you start to feel selfconcious. i want to look good and feel good, but i also just want to blend.

    Hmmm....well, poop to those people.

Talk to your doctor about it. S/He'll probably be elated that you've lost as much as you have, and will be happy with your maintenance plan.

A note on the looking "too thin." I think some of it has to do with age. The older you are, the more...well, gaunt, for lack of a better word....you look when you lose a bunch of weight. Your skin is less elastic, you lose some muscle mass, especially on your face, and nothing really snaps back into place like it used to. I know that even at my age (27) when I lose 5-10 pounds (which granted is a lot for my 5ft, 2in frame), it all seems to come off my face, and I end up looking sick for a little while before my body manages to equilibrate. I mean, just watch what happened to Sarah Michelle Gellar's face over the course of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, or all the women on Friends. So probably most of that has to do with how other people percieve you, not how you actually are, health-wise.

As a response to those people, maybe say something like, "No one's ever DONE dieting!" with a wink? Or, "Be sure to call my wife if you notice I'm gone completely."

Bahahahahaha. Thanks, Auntie! Can you imagine making comments in the other direction?? Well, sweetie, your face looks like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man's!

    Oy.

I like these. I've been saying things like, Well, my doctor seems to think I'm just fine...

Still. It's worth a mention during the next visit.

I'm heartened to find out I'm not the only one who's faced this. While I was still losing, I had a neighbor come up to me while I was walking Wesley. In an obvious reference to the re-shaping of my entire frame, she took my arm and got a concerned look and gave me doe-eyes while asking; "Are you well??"

lol, stick with your doctor's weight goal. I am now down 32 lbs from 242 on Sept 1. Now at 210, my wife says I have lost enough because my pot gut is gone and my pants have gone from 40" waist to 34". 100 sit ups a day helps. According to my doctor, I am still fat. I have 40 more pounds to lose to get to 170. My customers liked me fat. One of them asked me if I had cancer or something.

i think some people are used to seeing us a certain way so if we lose a significant amount of weight we no longer look like the same person they've always know. others are afraid we're ill because losing weight through diet and exercise is difficult. and still others want to believe we're sick because they're just nasty.

then there's my aunt. she enjoyed being able to tell me i was fat. since she can't do that anymore the next best thing is to tell me i look sickly. i think she was secretly hoping i'd put the weight back on. well neener neener, jackie! :tease:

neener, neener to her. I'm so proud of you guys that you're losing weight and you're all healthy, I had this too when I was skinner at one time and people would tell me to stop losing weight, now I'm on the other end, but when I was on your end I would just ignore it and take it either as jealousy or didn't care and was happy I was healthy

You are my hero. I'm doing crunches and other core-strengthening stuff, but am nowhere near 100 situps.

Waist - That to me was the coolest thing about my reduction. I, too, started at a size 40 pants. Belt, too. I was 254 at the onset.

I am now a size 32 waist and LOVING IT!!! My sweats, running shorts, and bathing suit are all MEDIUMS, as the Larges are too loose, something I learned the hard way.......

Not ALL at once, Dan, 25 four times a day. 100 in a row would kill me!
