I really dont like that word, but the vets office said my kitty is OBESE. She weighs all of 12 pounds. Doesnt seem alot when I think Beanie is 9 pounds and half her size. But I agree 110% she needs to be put on a diet. They also said to switch her to senior food. SENIOR??? She is only 6
SO now I need to look for a diet food for her. Also I will have to remove the never ending bowl in her room. She isnt going to be happy with me.
Please, before you buy senior food, or diet food, please check Dr.Lisa's info on cat food.

With a diabetic cat, and one on subq fluids I was desperate. It took 6 weeks but I switched mine to raw and they all look and feel 100% better
My big boy weighs a wopping 22lbs/10kgs. He is HUGE. He needs to drop a few but he is not obese...just massive. I always think of British Shorthairs (his breed) as being the Labradors of the cat world -- big and chunky!
Anyway, what I would do is stop all free feeding. Do set meals and feed according to her TARGET weight and not her ACTUAL weight. I would say no to the senior food -- not necessary at all. I have a 13 year old cat who still looks like a youngest and he is on a regular adult food. The extra protein/fat helps retain muscle mass and keep their coat in shape. Also, if you can get her to exercise a little that will help...although my old boy won't play my other two (both 5 years old) love to play chase the string/ball/toy/etc.
We have always let them have the endless food bowl. We have stopped this. But GOD are they really spoiled. Beanie walks around the house crying. She doesnt like to see the bottom of the bowl. She will let you know when its time to feed them. The problem I am having is Farrah doesnt want to eat when I feed them. I think she is worried about Romey for some reason.
So I have been keeping her locked in the room until her food is gone.
I have tried the raw with her, she isnt interested at all. Romey will eat it anyday, but farrah walks away. Now I havent tried everything, more chicken than anything. Maybe I will need to find something more processed for her.Originally Posted by Cinder4evr
Its funny when I give Mambo chicken or anything for that matter, I am always catching Romey sitting on the floor helping himself.
Try heating the raw food to "mouse" temperature. I serve it with lots of warm water so it's soupy.
There are a few canned foods that do well, with higher protein and less carbs. Look for something at least 10% protein.

Thank you for the links.
Can you post pics of your fat cat, Amanda? And your little one for a size comparison? I too, would be leery of putting my cat on senior food at 6, if at all. I let Cleo free feed, but she doesn't abuse it. I think your cats will get used to the new feeding times shortly.
Karina, Abzilla and the Helomonster.
Yes, I will do it when I get home. I have one of Beanie, but only have farrahs head.
Ok, here is a picture of Beanie. She weighs in at 9 pounds.
And My Obese farrah. She weighs 12 pouinds. But god look at how much bigger she is. I agree she needs to lose a few pounds.
