Default Anyone have cats that are declawed?

I had Romey declawed about 2 years ago and I am taking my other kitty in next week to have her checked over so we can do her as well.

No but I got those soft claws put on them. I have 3 kitties and they used to tear up the funiture but not anymore. those things are awesome and they are not that expensive.

They make them for dogs too! I got them done at the vet but you can buy them yourself.

my 2 indoor cats are declawed. i didnt have ginger at the time so i didnt have to worry about her stepping on their feet or anything. one cat gets along with ginger better than the other.

When I had Romeys claws removed he didnt seem to be in that much pain. They gave him great pain killers, I have to say I think he became addicted. I mean truly. a junkie for the meds. I finally had to start telling him "NO".

Mambo had some, they were liquid. He would limp over and hold one paw up. Always the same paw, I would give him the meds and he would be happy. Well days later he would be running through the house playing than all of a sudden limp over to me and lift his paw. I gave in alot thinking he was in alot of pain until one day, he lifted the wrong paw. We stopped the meds at that point. He didnt stop there, for weeks he would come over and lift his paw.

I think one paw was hurting him more than the other, not real sure why.

I had experience with a Declawed cat once. I rescued her because she was going to be put down. She was biting her owners everytime they tried to get near her front paws. She was only front declawed. It took a lot of work to get her to trust people around her feet. It can have severe damage on their mental state. I just leave mine with claws on. It takes training to get them to know where they can sharpen their claws and where they can't.

Please rethink your decision on declawing. Cats walk on the tip of their toes. When they declaw they have to take off the bone of the toe to the first joint because the claw grows from the bone. So basically they are taking off the bone the cat walks on. They also have to cut tendons that are attached to the claws. They can no longer stretch those muscles fully. They are finding out cats are more prone to arthritis in later years because of the unbalanced body. They use their claws to defend territory. It does make some cats very defensive. They use their claws as a stress relieve. I watch my cats and if they are stressed will have a wild scratching session. Also they mark their territory with scent and visual. That ratty looking scratch post to a cat is also a stress relief because they feel their territory is well protected.
They use their claws for balance. They use their claws for grooming.
Cat's claws are not a useless piece of their anatomy. They are very important to the cat's physically and mentally wellbeing. Please research how a cat walks and why their claws are important.
