That is a nice list!  Thanks!  Now, Ik now Caleb can't do pork, but about everything else is ok.  Also, watch, cause Caleb would not eat liver.  Tried beef, chicken, veal and he would pick the liver out and eat the rest.  That was hard when we were traveling to leave a bunch of liver in the bathroom trash can!  The holistic vet mentioned to try organic livers since the liver is the filtering system.  He ate it!  Now he'll still pick out liver that is not organic, but now at least he eats liver.  Said all that to say that some dogs need the organic ofal meals rather than just from the store where you don't know how the animal was raised.

Great list! Riley doesn't do pork either...and he will only eat liver if it's stuck to a chicken back.

Interesting about liver. I tried duck livers tonight and Hoss left most of it in his bowl, but ate the hearts (wild ducks).

Thanks for this. I often wonder what they can eat and can't. Some vets here say no pork and only beef bones.

Ernie loves, hearts and liver of all animals. I was told to feed him chicken necks, but he doesn't like them. He licks them and thems in my bed. eeewwww. it is like finding a skinned finger.

I put all the meat together and blend it with vegs. Erns loves this and doesn't pick stuff out. I also make little patties or cookies with the mix. This is great to take out.

Okay - I know this is an old thread, but I was asking questions and was basically told to "look it up myself" - so that's what I'm trying to do.

Help me know if I'm understanding this right because I'm considering this for my doggies (3) and I'm not sure if I do understand and I can't seem to find anything that spells it out...

You buy these "pieces parts" and either cut them up into smaller pieces or blend them together to make edible "stuff" for them to eat?  Is that right?  So I would go to a butcher, or organic farm and buy animal parts (sorry I'm SO a vegetarian - but my pups are important to me) and chop them up into helpings for the kids.  Then once a day (either breakfast or dinner) they get the raw food instead of the dry.  And I'm guessing any "extra" can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer... right?

Let me know if this is right - or if I'm way off base.  I'm really wanting to research this before I make my decision to switch.  We already only feed them Neutro, so they're not used to anything but dry food... but I want them to all be as healthy as possible.

Thanks.

What I do is buy a package of chicken thighs (usually, because they are CHEAP) or pork ribs and maybe weigh them to get an idea of how big each piece is.  Sometimes I can tell by feeling them.  I cut them if they need to be cut to make the right amount.  Then I get whatever my muscle meat is (usually ground turkey, ground beef, chicken breasts, or steaks), weigh them, and then get out some organ meat (I buy that and freeze it...they don't get much of this).  If I am doing veggies, I blend them up into a baby-food consistency.  The general rule I follow is to feed 2-3% of your dog's weight in raw.  So my dog is around 70 pounds, and that means he gets between 20 and 32 ounces a day, or he would if I fed completely raw, which I don't.  I feed 65% raw meaty bones (the chicken thighs), so he would get about 13-20 ounces of that, 25-30% muscle meat (ground meat or steak), and that would be about 5-7 ounces of that, and the remainder is organ meat and veggies.  I usually just sort of guess on those.  A small piece of liver thrown into several of the meals is fine (maybe around 1/2-1 ounce?).  If I'm doing veggies I probably spoon in around 1/8 cup.  I buy freezer Ziploc bags and package each meal up separately.  I then throw them in the freezer, and we're ready to go.  I pull one out to defrost the day before he will eat it.  So each little bag contains 7-10 ounces RMB, 3-4 ounces muscle meat, 1/2 ounce liver sometimes, and 1/8 cup veggie mix.  The reason these are split in half is because I feed twice a day.  My dog actually only gets one raw meal a day because I feed kibble for his other meal.  He also gets a raw egg with the shell a few times a week, and I sometimes spoon in some plain organic yogurt with live cultures for easier digestion.  I haven't had to do this lately though, as he's gotten so used to the raw food.

I also wanted to mention that I don't really supplement.  I will add fish oil or try to feed fish once a week for his coat and skin, but I feel his diet is balanced because of the kibble he eats for his other meal.

Thank you SO MUCH ks02!  That REALLY helps me know how you split it up... and how you go about feeding!  I've got 3 babies... so it's going to be quite a chore and I want to make a wise, informed decision and your post really gave me what I was looking for!  Again - thank you very much!!! Smiley

I pretty much do what ks02 does.
i don't do anything that's too rich...webster's still a pup and his digestive system is still developing, so i stick with raw chicken, hamburger and kidney.  he gets half an organic chicken carcass for breakfast and one for his lunch -- supper meal is a combo of hamburger and kidney pieces with his supplements added in.
i make enough of his supper meals to last for a month.

Thanks again... 3 kiddies are a LOT to consider...  Plus I'm wondering what about the neighbor's great danes (2 of them) who tend to eat dinner with us each night.  (Don't you wish your kids lived in my neighborhood?)  I swear they eat me out of house and home, but I can't turn them away.  Their "daddy" always says how they never want to eat - and I don't know what kind of crap he feeds them (way too late like after midnight) but they come and knock (yes I said KNOCK) at my back door around 6 pm... they know that's supper time.  And they sit with my 3 and wait (it's SO cute) for me to get everyone's bowls ready in the kitchen.  Then one at a time I say each ones name before I set the bowl down so that they know who's "turn" it is.  We never have quarrels, and it works great!  BUT - I may have to keep the regular Nutro for the GREATS if/when I switch my babies to raw!  Shocked

Hate to bring up an old thread, but...

I dont see turkey backs on there but was told they were soft enough to chew/digest. Should I not be feeding them or should they be added to the list?

Feeding Raw for Over 12 Years

Yes, turkey backs are digestable but have alot more bone to meat compared to the other parts.  If you feed just turkey backs, this could make a pup prone to constipation.  Many raw feeders feed turkey backs along with meatier parts of the turkey in the same meal to avoid constipation.

I don't remember seeing turkey backs packaged by themselves in the supermarket.  Probably because I usually look for and just buy a whole turkey and then cut off hunks of meat that include the backs for feeding.

In answer to your question, I wouldn't buy a package of turkey backs for a weeks worth of meals regardless of how inexpensive that are.  Get a whole turkey instead and cut off portions for a weeks worth of meals.  Some of those portions can contain backs connected to other meatier parts of the turkey.

Sorry for misleading you in an earlier thread.  I think of any one part in context with the whole prey over a period of time.
