We have never had problems with our boys anal glands. They have just always expressed them, themselves. We switched them from Blue Buffalo to Nutro lg breed light and now they are "losing" their anal gland fluid everywhere, couch, bed, etc. I'm not sure if we need to take them in to have them expressed or if that is even the problem. They are obviously getting it out, but they are both licking a lot. Is it the food?
HELP!
It might be the food. What was the reason you switched? You may try to post this question in the Lab Health subforum to get more/better answers. Is it the food?

Thank you! I hadn't realized where I posted it. I guess I was goofing around and posted it without checking.
We origonally had them on SD but heard several bad things about it which the vet fought of course, so now Im even more confused. Then she also said nasty things about Blue Buffalo (which they did great on) because it wasn't tested on animals before sold, and was "all natural".
For starters, time to get a new vet and second, I need some help figuring out what really is or is not good food.
Thanks again!
Their coats look GREAT in your picture!

The thing about dog food is that not all dogs do well on certain brands no matter how expensive or who recommends it.
If your dog is doing well on a particular brand, then by all means keep them on it.
I know of dogs that do well on Science Diet and some that don't. Same with Euk, Pro Plan, Arkat or any of the other premium brands.
I do beleive that dogs being carnivors do need a meat based diet.
As far as anal glands, you can always express them yourself. Just use a laytex glove, hold the bottom of the dog up and squeeze the anal passage. Haven't had to do it in years and hope I never have to do it again.
