Freddy goes to the back door when he needs to go out, but he doesn't bark or whine. He hasn't had an accident in the house in a long time (he's 16 weeks old), but we watch him very carefully and take him out whenever he looks like he needs to go. Does anyone have any suggestions for teaching him to make some kind of noise when he has to go out?

My daughter has a 51/2 month old lab boxer mix. She is terrible on the leash. She is 50 pounds, but pulls like a 80 pound dog. They bought her a choker chain, I told her not to use it...we took the dogs for a walk yesterday and she pulled so hard we had to stop and sit because she was gasping and her tongue was purple. I am really afraid she is going to hurt herself. She is great off leash...we walk in the cemetery and she does great off leash, she walks a few feet ahead, but always comes when she is called. Her recall is better than my 2 year old labs.

Any suggestions for collars or harnesses? She is enrolling in obedience classes as soon as she saves some money up, but a better collar is needed for now.

She doesn't bark to go out or let me know she wants to go so I send her out regularly. I give lots of praise and treats when she goes.
The back door is open all day and at night if Erns barks to go out I send her out too.

I watch and see her squat so think good she has gone. A few moments later find she has peed inside. I can't work out why she squats pretending to go and doesn't.

I don't let her out of my sight and if I can't watch her crate her. I don't like doing this as when Laura has her she is in a small crate for long hours. Gems belongs to Laura who is away a lot and because she spends to much time in the crate I take her.

Earlier I put them out, put a log of wood on the fire, turned and thought where is Gemma. By the time I stood up I saw her coming out of the room she pees in. Yep pee on the floor.

I have a 17 week old yellow lab who has been scratching alot. The vet suggested that I change her food. He believes that it may be a corn allergy/sensitivity. I am currently feeding her Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy food. He suggested Nature's Recipe instead. I noticed that the Pro Plan has 28% protein and the Nature's Recipe has only 22%. He doesn't feel that this matters but I am not so sure. Obviously I want to make sure she gets what she needs for proper growth and development. Any experience or advice on this would be appreciated.

We rescued a 2-year old yellow lab about a week and a half ago, according to the vet and everone else who has seen her, she was not socialized properly and is quite afraid of us. In the beginning we were able to take her for a few walks but now she will not let us get near her to put the leash on. I know dealing with an unsocialized dog can be difficult but how can I break down this "wall" and get her to trust me. I have heard obediance classes will help, but I cannot get close to her to take her to classes. Any ideas?

My 16 week old lab refuses to go out for a walk. She is fine walking on the leash in the back yard, but is terrified of EVERYTHING in the neighborhood, the park etc. She is particularly afraid of moving cars. We have had her since she was 8 weeks and other than this she is a wonderful puppy with a really sweet temperment. I have tried to lure her with treats and tried carrying her away from the house but it doesn't help. Any advise would be great. Thanks.

I am just wondering if this is normal and how to handle it.

When I take Jax for a walk to the park, we are not there 5mins and he sniffs around and cries, walks a bit, sniffs and cries again. He refuses to pick up a quick momentum so we both get some exercise. Why could he be crying and what can I do about it?

He also refuses to drink any water that I take along for him. I've resorted to taking his water bowl from home and he will drink from that, but just a bit, not enough at all, for as thirsty as he seems. He seems very thirtsy when we haven't walked much at all.

Last but not least he will sometimes, on very rare occassions pee in the park. He has never pooped at the park, or anywhere else for that matter. I've tried taking him for walks around town as well. Same with the constant stopping and crying and sniffing, panting, but wont drink, and will NOT pee or poop.
When we finally get home, he makes a run for our back yard and goes there if he needs to and will drink water from his bowl at home.

How do I make this better? Please help!

Hello,

I am a first time puppy owner to my 6mos old chocolate lab. He is the best and I'm so happy I have him.

The problems is that he eats his poop. ALL of it. Actually, he eats everything out doors; twigs, grass, dirt, chew on pebbles and rocks, etc... and many times he throws up at during the night, stuff I can't really make out what it is. He won't eat his puke, thank goodness, but why is he eating his poop, and what can I do about it.

Any suggestions would be so appreciated. I have a 7yr old son who LOVES to be all over him, they love to be all over each other, but I can't allow that if Jax is eating his poop, and my son althoug he understands, gets upset.

Thanks in advance,

So we have a 1 year old chocolate lab, Porter, who is the model child...easy to train, sweet, great with other dogs and very good all the time. We brought home a yellow lab puppy, Trout, last week and he was 8 weeks old. Within 2 days he was already showing signs of dominance with our other dog and at times he gets a little agressive with the other dog (stalking him then attacking, not letting go when the other dog yelps, etc.) and will lash out at us when he is scolded or corrected. I know a ton about dogs and training and this guy is throwing me for a loop. I have been extrememly consistant with him but he is just testing me like no other dog or animal I have ever worked with. I know with the other dog I need to let him work it out but it is hard to watch him constantly harass Porter who dosent have a mean bone in his body! The agression with us really worries me...he is not afraid of us at all and I have done everything you are supposed to do to establish your dominance and this little guy just won't give in to the battle for power like I think normal puppies do. We have only had him two weeks so I am thinking that maybe we just need more time but when he went after my mom's face aggressively when she corrected him for biting I was shocked. If anyone has any insight PLEASE share. This guy is stressing me out!

Installed a PetSafe IF and started training. Did the vibration and beep the 1st day and on the second day moved to electricity. I set the collar on 3- one higher than the lowest setting. she was burned 3 times as I walked her past the flags . Then she sat and stubbornly refused to move. I did not want to drag her into any IF areas so I shut training down. Next day she refused to come off the deck. I have since backed off the training and have taken her into the yard only for play. I also feed her about 6 feet from a flag. Soon I plan to start training again with only the beep and the vibration and then move to the lowest shock setting. She is an extremely intelligent lab and ( I thought) pretty hard as she is high energy. Anyone out there with experience on the training who could advise me? I called PetSafe and they concurred with my plan so far. Pearl is 4 mos. old and knows obedience commands. Thanks, Paul

Hi,
I'm new to the forum--
My husband and I just brought home a little lab (he's 6.5 weeks old) and we've had him for three days. We also have a precious, sweet 13 year old male lab mix (not seeming thrilled with the new addition but taking it in stride).
We have a pen off the kitchen where the puppy is sleeping (equipped with bed, toys, food and lined with paper for accidents, though he's had very few, since we are getting up to let him out at night). Which brings me to our question, the past three nights after we've let him out to pee, we've sat in the pen with him anywhere from 15 mins to an hour until he's played out and goes back to sleep. We only wanted to do this the first few nights so he would adjust to his new home, feel safe and to diminish seperation anxiety, but we don't intend to keep doing this. We would like to start getting him used to being taken out when he wakes up at night to pee and then put back in the pen and left alone so we all can go back to sleep. How yourn is too young to do this? And if he cries and yelps up a storm, as he has indicated he will, how long is too long to leave him doing that? (I assume the answer to that last question will apply to leaving him for periods of time in the pen by himself during the day, whether we are here or not, which we know he needs to get used to as well).
Thanks in advance for input--and if there is a thread already addressing this that I didn't find, let me know--
Peace,

So, I've had Lita, my rescue, for 3 weeks now. When she first arrived, I noticed some fears in her, like the bear cutouts along our neighbor's fence, other dogs... But tonight! Oh. My. God. She freaked at cats, dogs, roller blades, skateboards, bikes...

I tried to get her to stay around the stuff and see if she would eventually calm down. I made her sit and resit. After an hour of getting bitten by mozzies and getting scratched and embarrassed by this dog, I decided that we had had enough and we went home. We have started our basic obedience training, but I think that I'll talk to the trainer to see if there's anything I can try to get her over these fears. It is making walking her a horrible experience!

And I feel terrible for Dio. He has to be left home or taken on separate walks since she consumes so much of my attention. Any ideas or tips that could help me?
