Well, the boys and I headed to New York this past weekend so I could show Caleb in obedience. Not a bad entry--9 or 10 in each class. On Saturday a provisonal obedience judge was hanging around outside the ring with his bitch that just came out of season. Well, we know what part of his body Caleb was thinking with on both runs! We did q in Utility and took a 3rd place but no points. NQ'd in Open cause he missed the command to drop. But he did hold his sit stay.

Sunday we had a run off in Utility which we lost and ended up in second place--good for 2 more points. We won a run-off in Open which was also good for 2 points. And we ended up with High in Trial (our 20th) and High Combine.

Up to 80 points now!

This really isn't an "obedience/rally/tracking" question, but... do dog shows typically have someone around doing CGC evaluations, or how do you folks usually locate a place that's doing CGC tests? I tried the AKC site but it wasn't real helpful; didn't even bring up the recent AKC CGC test that I missed hearing about.

Well the cooler weather certainly agrees with Kodi! We were entered in Open and Utility today in Marshall. The crowd was fairly small (11 in Open and the same in Utility). Kodi earned a third place in both, with a 195 in Utility (for ONE whole OTCH point! At this rate, it will only take about 10 more years to get the OTCH!) and a 197 in Open, loosing by only 1/2 point. Both dogs she lost to have their OTCH's and both have UDX11 or 12 I think, so not too bad!

Ever so gradually, her fronts and finishes are getting better, in practice mostly. But she was so geeked up and happy that she bounced the dumbell, and slammed into me for a front. 1/2 points off in each exercise for the most part instead of 1-2 like last year. Dang, this is slow going! But I would not trade the happy attitude for anything, so plug along we will!:tongue1:

Well we had an interesting 5 days of agility..Started out getting to the hotel..getting the bags up to the 3rd floor room..look around no frig..called the front desk and they said did you call this morning to have them save you one..ummm no I called several months ago to reserve a room with a frig..sorry you have to call the morning of to make sure they save you one..oh really..arggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh .. sorry can't help you we are filled up .. we can leave a message and if someone checks out we can change your room.. luckily most of the dog food treats were frozen when we left the house that night in a cooler with blue ice..next morning I check and they don't know yet if the room is free yet but they could put me in a double but it's not clean soooooooooo I have to move all the stuff back into the car so they can clean the room I'm in because they are sold out again and wait until I get back after the agility trial to move into the new room.. which tho it did have a frig had ants too...ugggggggghhhhhhhhhhh and believe it or not that was only the bad of the weekend..

We are at the agility trial..we haven't had our first run and the ugly happens..I'm walking Robbie to go potty, passing the practice jump not close but the dog at the practice jump comes up from behind us and attacks Robbie..I literally had to pull Robbie up by his leash to get him away from the attacking dog..I get Robbie in my arms and the gal gets her dog..I take
Robbie back to our setup and he goes under a chair hiding and shaking..won't even come out to me until I get some chicken out..When he finally calms down enough (and I calm down enough) I check him out and can't find any marks on him even tho I know the dog had his mouth on him and Robbie was screaming..the gal who owned the other dog finds us to check on Robbie but is already saying oh her dog has been attacked by little dogs (her dog is a Samoyed) and is now going after the little dogs first yeah right...I take our treats and walk Robbie around the agility area and he seems okay..He did run in two classes that day and seemed to do okay. I did report the dog and the committee did a hearing but at the time I couldn't tell them if the dog actually got Robbie or not because I hadn't found any marks..so they ended up just telling her the dog couldn't be off leash except while in the ring..well that night Robbie kept yelping when I picked him up and I checked him over again and found two bruises and a small tooth size scab on his chest..He does seem to be alright now.

the good..we had some nice runs but not a single qualifying score (after seeing your dog attacked I was just happy he was running well and happy)..We also did a 2 day seminar that was good..got worked really hard but it was good.

I went ahead and signed up for a couple Rally Novice shows... there's three in September within a 2 hour drive, then nothing nearby until late Oct/Nov and they're much further away. So we're giving it a try now. Pup can heel, down, sit, stay, come, finish both sides as long as I'm allowed to take a step or two. It's not going to be beautiful but we should pass and have fun while we're doing it. LOL. My main concern is that I can't seem to find anyone locally who does rally (imagine that?!) and I'd really like to go through a rally course or two and have someone critique our performance before we step in the ring for the real deal. Doesn't look like that's going to happen though.

So... talk to me about rally novice. I can talk to my dog while I go through the course, right? if we mess up on a station we have one chance to retry it? Tell me about common errors you've seen handlers do, things I should keep in mind, tips, comments, etc... I've watched some YouTube videos (LOL) of handlers going through Novice and getting near-perfect scores, I know what it's supposed to look like, it's just the tricks of the trade I'd like to know about, so to speak.

Thanks!

Hi there!

Went to an obedience run through last night. Miles did very well but we still have work to do. Did great on signals we just need to build distance.

Scent articles, he blew the metal one. Now I have a question. I used ATC method so for 3 months I always scented the same dumbbells and even kept them in a plastic bag never aired them out for that period of time. Ihave since aired out my articles often. I think those original two now still have that scent becuase he sometimes selects those. Now I am looking at the rules. The handler gets to pick which two articles to scent, right? So I can just stay with those original 2 right?

Directed retrieve he did very well on. We've made big progress there. He blew the #1 but it was clearly in how I directed him. When we retried, he got it.

Moving stand for exam went fine but he licked the "judges" leg.

Go outs, he's making great progress on but we still need to build distance, but we now have more distance than we've ever had before. In both tries, he went to the correct jump.

I wasn't very pleased with his heeling last night but it was pretty warm in there and I suspect he was a little tired from a busy week. We have been in class every night this week. I do need to get back to more heeling work again. I am going to save the special treats for obedience and use the good treats for agility. Agiltiy is pretty rewarding on its own for him.

It was overall very good. I kept it light, I had his ball so I could throw that around the ring. I wanted to keep it fun and rewarding for him right now.

We did an agility trial this weekend .. aac friday and cpe saturday and sunday

Thea ran 2,3, and 2 classes
Brody 2,3,3
Sally 3,3,3

I worked when I wasn't running

I have never done three days of agility with them all (only once done it with Brody back in 2008) - and had a total of 15 classes under our collective since starting the comeback tour in June of 2010

Thea ran beautifully all weekend - she missed 3 qs (took too long to go through the chute in one class - but she did it!; didn't get enough points in one class (a gamblers class) and took a wrong jump in a snookers course (for a total of 8 points -LOL)
She did earn her first advanced jumpers q in her first attempt and she did do every dog walk I asked her to do confidently (I kept her off the teeter as we are retraining that)
she finished 2 titles :) 4/7 qs for her

Brody was his usual boring rockstar self - missed a jackpot q for lack of points, and a jumpers q cause I turned left not right - DOH but ran foot perfect apart from that - earned his Masters Snookers Dog of Canada title .. and earned 6/8 qs

Sally - my wild wild child ran like a dream .. she missed the same jackpot q as everybody else on team us ... so obviously my track was OFF only by a few points
and her aac snookers course she was 3 points off - but snookers is not a q I thought we'd ever get past 8 points with her .. she'll be running advanced jumpers from now on .. ( I really wanted to keep her an thea in different classes but whatever at least they aren't the same height) and earned her first three titles :D.. 7/9 q for her

Sunday we ran 8/8 .. phenomenal dogs were honestly foot perfect - the bobbles were all mine ...

I'm not actually sure of placements ... but checking the labels I see 1sts and 2nds across the board ...

what fun!!

We spent all of last weekend at an AKC agility trial. I don't trial much in the summer because the heat really deteriorate Miles performance so I just skip summer. This trial is held in air conditioned building! WooHoo!

The weekend could not have gone better. We had 7 runs and 7 Qs! Six first place ribbons and one second. Two titles NA and NAJ! Novice A is such a lovely place to be!

Friday we started with a clean Jumpers run-second place. In Standard, I was so worried about one trap, I didn't prepare for an earlier one in the course so we had 5 faults for an off course, but the rest went according to plan and we Q'd and got first place. We also tried Novice FAST and that was alot of fun. We got a Q and first there too.

Saturday was a perfect day. We had a clean Jumpers run and a clean Standard run. Those were fun because those were for the titles. My instructor was a bar setter for the Standard run and I knew we were good after we crossed the finish because I heard a big "whoop!" coming from her corner. :)

Sunday was insurance. I chose not to move up. My dog was ready but I am such a novice handler and thought it would be better just to stay in Novice. Besides, data entry errors happen. Would hate to move up and find out later I didn't actually get the titles because of a paperwork problem. We got 95 in both. We had a refusal in Jumpers (ran past the jump) and a 95 in Standard. Miles ran off the table. Then he didn't want to down on it. Perhaps because a prior dog had pee'd on the table. I am standing trying to down him and he is looking at me "In THAT???" He finally did. We lost quite a bit of time fooling with that.

It was a great weekend! I had fun and learned lots. Now will move up to Open for September

been awhile since we've had a discussion but I'm curious about how other people do goal setting.. I am getting back to agility and as part of that process am trying to set goals for the dogs (and myself)

some of my goals seem really fluffy ("have fun")
others aren't very specific at all ("improve contact performance")
and others I'm having trouble creating a frame of reference for (how many qs/titles are reasonable in what time frame? I just don't know)

My daily training goals/plan come together ok my long range goals are ok - but the in between ones I'm not so sure about

I'd love to know who works with goals - how you frame them etc and for those who don't how do you ensure you keep moving forwards?

thanks :)
