What does "overdone" mean when speaking of a labrador's conformation? Just for my own curiosity...?
Thanks!![]()

It can mean a variety of this, and is totally subjective (like most things about a dog's conformation'
Generally it means that the dog is just that, overdone...too much bone, coat, head etc. Even just meaning that there is cumulatively too much dog.
Hmm... well, to provide context:
I saw a lab breeder (most definitely show/bench labs) yesterday at a match that we went to, and she and her puppy were in class with Baloo a year ago, when he first started at Marie's. We were talking and she looked at Baloo and said "Oh, he was WAY overdone as a puppy, but looks good now." Me, not knowing what that meant was just like, "yaahhh... hehe." :embarrass:
So I was just curious at what "overdone" meant. I sort of assumed it meant too much dog/bone, too stocky/heavy etc. but Baloo's never been like that, if anything I think he swings closer to the field-esque physique of his jumbled pet-bred pedigree.
It really doesn't matter to me and I'm certainly not offended at all, I just thought it was interesting.![]()

That is interesting that she would say that about Baloo. He's a very moderate dog and always seems to have been. As Melissa said, overdone is an obvious extreme, IMO. I've seen plenty of overdone dogs by my personal tastes, but to others they would be okay.

Meh, maybe she was confusing him with another dog. Or maybe she meant too field-esque? Like, overdone in a field-y way..? Who knows.![]()

But also remember, what people see is very subjective. You DO understand what "over-done" means, but what's over-done to one, might not be to another.

For sure, but I think she can't possibly think he was overdone in a show/bench way, as her dogs are way more bench-y than Baloo has ever been. The more I think about it, the more I think she must have been thinking of another dog. 8)Originally Posted by CYNLABS

Hey Kate, care to share (privately of course) who the breeder is? That'll give me some insight.
A lot of different stuff up that way for sure, so her extreme might not be at all.
Baloo is a nice moderate boy, always has been.
