Default Angel wings and other markings on yellow labs....Question

I love how yellow labs have such a wide variety of shades. Each is so uniquely different in terms of their coat color/markings. Each shade of yellow has a certain name, those light patched along the shoulders have a certain name, and the darker spots on the ears do too. What about labs that have a distinctly dark mask on their face? Does that have a special name or is it just called a mask? How common is it? Is it carried in certain lines? Just wondering.

I'm starting to think I was the only one who noticed this!

Rhys had one (he's greying now)

And my Ruby has a very faint one...

    Runs in lines? Dunno.

Yep! That is exactly what I am talking about! My friend's lab has a "mask" exactly like that. It seems that whenever I see that "marking" it is always right over the eyes and down the nose....it is never dark on the cheeks or the top of the head. Very distictive and interesting. I think it should have a "special" name.

Hmm, intresting...Our bitch has a distinctive 'saddle' (dark shoulders/withers) but that's pretty common...

Casey has the mask, too, her one claim to fame. It's gettting a bit grey around the edges these days.

I agree, it should have a "special" name but as far as I know it doesn't. Casey's mom and grandma didn't have masks but all of her littermates that I saw (about half) did so I suspect there is a genetic component.

Around here, in California, I've noticed there is a breeder whose yellows almost all have very distinctive darker masks. It is amazing, but going to a show, you almost immediately know one of her dogs from across the ring because of that mask.

Neither of my yellow boys have had a mask. I have noticed that many do though.

Was just lurking on here and curiously noticing...yes Phoebe has a mask too. I wonder how common they are? They're very cute
